The
BWWMH Laboratory Department captured
Department of the Year honors for 2008, as
announced during the Annual Employee
Christmas Party on December 19 in the
classroom.
“Selection for this honor is based
on a number of things,” explained CEO Mike
Marshall. “First, the department must meet
budget for the year, followed by a vote of
the Employee Relations Committee along with
other criteria.
Then, qualifying departments are
submitted for consideration and selected by
a vote of senior management.”
As the only department to meet all the
criteria this year, the lab was the obvious
choice for the honor, however, that
doesn’t detract from the award. “The lab
is one of those departments I don’t have
to worry about because I know things are
going to get done and they will be done
appropriately,” Marshall explained. “We
hardly ever have any complaints at all about
the lab.”
The Lab staff consists of 17
employees, including Medical Technologists (MTs),
Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLTs) and
Phlebotomists. MTs must hold a bachelor’s
degree and must pass a national
certification given by an approved
credentialing agency. MLTs must have an
associate’s degree and must also pass a
national certification. Phlebotomists either
complete a certified phlebotomy program or
are trained on the job. Phlebotomists
collect blood samples, while the
technologists and technicians perform
testing in the following areas: chemistry,
serology, hematology, microbiology,
immunology, coagulation, urinalysis and the
blood bank.
