The
Bryan Whitfield Memorial Hospital Auxiliary
recognized six area students on April 23 by
presenting them each a $1,500 scholarship to
aid them in pursuing healthcare careers.
“We
look at this as a chance to help not only
deserving students receive an education, but
also to help promote healthcare as a career
choice,” said Brenda Parr, president of
the organization.
The
Auxiliary initiated the scholarship program
in 2005 with the establishment of the Emmett
and Carolyn Clinkscales Scholarship and the
Carolyn S. (Betty) McCormick Scholarship.
While both of the scholarships are
available to residents of Marengo, Sumter,
Hale, Choctaw, Perry, Greene and Clarke
counties, the McCormick scholarship is
granted only to children and/or
grandchildren of employees of the Tombigbee
Healthcare Authority.
Receiving
McCormick Scholarships this year were
Melissa Kay Flowers, Ashley Anne Green and
Mary Lindsay Osborne. Clinkscales
Scholarships were presented to Victoria
Denise Scott, Hunter Ray Vick and Donnanique
Annette Washington.
Flowers
is a senior at
Demopolis
High School and plans to become a registered
nurse. She will use the $1,500 gift
scholarship to attend the
University
of
West Alabama
in the fall. At
Demopolis
High School
, she was as a member of the yearbook staff,
the Writers Team, Science Olympiad, and
Drama Club. She was also a member of the
Medical Explorers Post at
Bryan
Whitfield
Memorial
Hospital
, a Gaineswood Belle and an Earth Day
volunteer. She is the daughter Mr. and Mrs.
Darrin Flowers of Linden.
A
student in
Samford
University
’s McWorter School of Pharmacy, Green is a
member of the Rho Chi Academic Honor
Society, the American Pharmacists
Association Academy of Student Pharmacists,
the Alabama Society of Health-System
Pharmacists, the Christian Pharmacy
Fellowship and Gamma Beta Phi National Honor
Society. A graduate of Demopolis High
School, she is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs.
John Green of Demopolis.
Osborne,
a senior at Marengo Academy, plans to become
a registered nurse practitioner. She will
attend the
University
of
West Alabama
in the fall. Osborne was very active at
Marengo Academy where she was a
representative in the Student Government
Association, editor of the yearbook,
treasurer of the Pep Club and secretary of
the Beta Club. She was also a member of the
National Senior Honor Society, Math Team,
Art Club, Spanish Club and Fellowship of
Christian Athletes. She was a varsity
cheerleader and a Diamond Doll. Osborne was
the school’s Girls State Representative in
2008 and was listed in Who’s Who Among
American High School Students. She is the
daughter Mr. and Mrs. George Osborne of
Linden.
Scott,
who is a senior at Demopolis High School,
will use the scholarship to attend Troy
University where she plans to study nursing.
At DHS, she is a member of the Beta Club,
National Honor Society, Key Club and FCCLA.
She is also active in the TEMPO (Teens
Empowering and Motivating their Peers to Opt
Out) and YEP (Young Empowerment Program)
programs sponsored by the GROWestAL Division
of the Tombigbee Healthcare Authority.
She is the daughter of the late Mr.
and Mrs. Richard Scott of Demopolis.
Vick
is a senior at Marengo Academy and will
attend the
University
of
West Alabama
as he prepares for medical school.
At MA, he is vice president of the
Beta Club and Student Government
Association. He is an editor on the yearbook
staff and has lettered in football, baseball
and weight lifting. Vick is also a member of
the National Honor Society, the Fellowship
of Christian Athletes, Spanish Club and was
the school’s Boys State Representative in
2008. He received the Wendy’s High School
Heisman Local Award during his senior year.
He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald
R. Vick of Pine Hill.
Washington
is a
Linden
High School
graduate. She is currently enrolled at
Alabama
A&M
University
where she will use the scholarship to
continue her studies to become an
obstetrician/gynecologist. At Alabama
A&M,
Washington
is a member of the Math Club, Honors
Program, Pre-Professional Club, University
Echoes and the TRIO Program. She maintains a
4.0 GPA and received the President’s Cup
Award in 2008-2009 and the Freshman
President’s Award in 2007-2008. She is the
secretary of the AAMU Honors Program and
editor-in-chief of the Honors
Bulletin.
Washington is the daughter of
Jeanette M. Washington of Linden, and the
late Donald G. Washington.
